Bases and MCGs

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question. As you've all mentioned, I'm CONSTANTLY looking for military campgrounds that aren't already listed here. Yes, we find one once and awhile.

There's currently 219 KNOWN military campgrounds listed here. Considering some of these are on the same base (Vandenberg AFB has 3), let's round this number down to 210 DIFFERENT bases having a campground. I don't know how many bases (Active, Reserve and Guard) there are in the states, but 210 bases having a military campground seems like a VERY LOW number to me. It's my guess very few miliary bases have a campgroud or RV Park.

Please - please - let me know if I'm wrong and there's 500 military campgrounds out there. I'm still searching for those "secret" military campgrounds. ;D

That's the question Larry -- just wondering how many bases actually have MCG's as a part of the Recreation Department, and how many or what percent don't ... just curious, that's all.

It seems like a great addition to the rec activities, but is probably expensive to build, so, I'm guessing most of the bases that do have them have been there quite awhile, and those that don't probably won't build one -- although al least one exception is King's Bay ... who built one two years ago and is so successful, they are adding another complete FHU section ...

I don't know if I am misunderstanding the question or not.

Some MCG are assigned to a post/base, but are not at that physical location.

As an example Luke AFB near Phoenix has two. But one is, I believe 35 miles away & one over 100 miles away in Flagstaff.

Same with the AF Academy in CO. Springs, CO. One is on base & is up in the mountains.

"I don't know if I am misunderstanding the question or not."

When I first became aware of MGC's I thought ALL bases had one -- operated by the Rec Dept ... then, I discovered not all bases have an MCG ... We have quite a list here ... so my question was actually what percent of bases have an MCG -- some are off-base, for sure, but still run by a specific base.

And..

Have heard tales (Like the Boy Scout Camp above) of NAS Willow Grove & NAS Brunswick, neither have CG.. allowing an RV to park for the night next to the hobby shop & use 120v (15a).. but best be gone when the station wakes up.. (0700 launch, MWR is being nice & does not want a lot of questions about what they let you do)

One several occcasions, like the Boy Scout camp, I've stayed on-base with permission from the Rec Dept -- so, if you'e traveling and near a base that has no MCG, just ask at the Rec Center because they sometimes have a spot they let you over-night. Same thing at Homestead -- no MCG, but when I asked at the Rec Dept -- the guy there said "Spend the night in the Gym parking lot" Security does not bother RV's at that location.

BTW: Homestead had been developing plans for a 14 unit MCG a couple years ago when I was there -- at that time, they were also doubling the size of the military hotel on-base -- anyone have an update about the MCG ... I haven't been back there in more than two years.
