Military Camp Grounds pushing out tents

It appears to be the trend that more and more camping facilities are disreguarding the fundamental camper who uses a tent rather than a RV or Trailer. Camping is just that not actually taking all of the comforts of home along with you. Also many sites charge people tent camping the same prices that they charge rv users. I think that MWR should get on the same sheet of operating procedures for all Camping Facilities.

Please be a bit more specific about which FamCamps are you referring to, because I’m not sure I agree with you. We have been using the Military FamCamp system since the mid 90’s and have found that many FamCamps have never had tenting areas, and those that did, in my experience, still have them. It is true that many campgrounds do not have tent areas, and I think that is a shame. Having said that, the first military campground we used back in 1995 or 1996 was Warren AFB, WY. They have a large tent area, yet in the six or eight times we have been there, we have yet to see a tent. Also, pricing for tent use, again in our experience, is ALWAYS cheaper than the RV sites. I’m the Camp Host at Ellsworth AFB; a FHU RV site here is $20.00/night – a tent site is $8.00, which includes use of the bathhouse, Wi-Fi, the playground – all the same amenities as the RVers. During the summer months, we have tenters in our campground almost every night, and have seen as many as thirty tents some nights. So, next year, please stop in at Ellsworth and stay awhile and enjoy the beautiful Black Hills!

Maddog, – Please re-read my comment above – I agree with you that many FamCamps do not set aside an area for tents, and freely admit that it is a shame that they do not do so. My disagreement was the comment that FamCamps charge the same for both tents and FHU-RVs. I checked the Little Creek listing on both this site and the Paths Across America site and see that RV sites are $18 and tent sites are $6. Neither reflects the change over you mention, so I’ll take your word for it. As stated before, I personally have never encountered similar pricing for both site types. Regarding the use of Golden Age passes, I am only aware of a couple of installations that pass along a discount for use of the GA pass. on another note, I am also aware of a couple facilities that give a discount if you’re a military club member, but in all cases, those decisions are local decisions made at the Non-Appropriated Funds level – MWR falls under the direction/control of NAF. Regardless, you do have valid concerns, and if I may make a suggestion, please take the time to voice your opinion. Go to www.ice.disa.mil and locate the installation in question and provide the feedback you are discussing here – voicing an opinion on this site makes one feel good, voicing an opinion on the above web site may actually change something. Good luck, and happy camping!

Last I knew, Travis AFB does allow tents and has a separate area for them. Unless this has changed within the last year.

Only "some" Army travel camps give a discount for Golden Age (usually not 50%). However, the USAF has the Frequent Camper program to get 5 free nights for every 10 nights stay at different USAF FamCamps.

Some military campgrounds are still free, while others charge over $50 a night. There's no consistency among the branches, or even within the same branch.

The Air Force as a whole is more accomodating to its clients and facilities I have seen are A-1.
