Hello, we are new to this forum. We are retired Navy and just started to travel the country in our RV. I have always carried a personal firearm and continue to do so while we travel. Does anyone else within this community follow the same practice?

Do you declare the weapon when entering the base, or do you make prior arrangements with the base armory and check your weapon in? If so, could you please comment on your experiences with the armory personnel? Where they pretty restrictive on hours to check your weapon in and out of the armory?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

An earlier thread "Guns in Our RVs" hit on this.

Any and all weapons that I might have in any vehicle would be secured and not visible.
Unless it's the law asking, I don't tell.

That must have been Nidal Hassan's theory as well...expect base security to ramp up in that regard!

We've pretty much stopped using on base campgrounds just do to this issue. (The same reason I don't travel to Canada.) I travel with a minimum of three hand guns. One hidden near the front door, one by the bed and one on my belt, at all times. The only time the one on my belt comes off is when I go to the post office, daily, to send out items I've sold on e-bay and then it's locked in my car just the time I'm there.

Not wanting to get into politics but had the soldiers at Ft Hood been allowed to carry concealed then Maj Hasan might not have been able to take out so many folks.

To get my concealed carry permit from my home state I had to prove I was proficient with my weapon and complete the course on the legal ramifications and responsibilites of carrying a weapon.

my rule of thumb is I call the base i plan to visit along the way and get a name, and the details.

each commander can set or change the rv policy
i have found the Airforce to be the most consistent
you need not declare it at the gate....
provided its in your "domicile" the rv.

so far i have not been turned away or had to check a weapon
but all have had the policy of
while on base in the RV
it must remained locked in a locked area or trigger lock
the ammo shall be separate from the firearm
you shall not display it while on post/base
it shall not be transported on/off base in a car or non rv.
if you going to use range facilities on post, it is required to call ahead, then check in a base police or armory and get a pass to tote it to and from your rv to the range.
i have a safe i keep the firearms in
and i lock the ammo in another box in the basement.
prudence of calling ahead has been good so far
but anything could change in an instant.
