Air Force Base Entry

Just had my wife's ID card renewed today and found out about a new base entry system to be implemented at CONUS AF Bases later this year.

It is called the Defense Biometric Identification System, or DBIDS.

It looks like our ID cards will be scanned at the gate and the display on the scanner will tell the gate guard if we are authorized access to the base.

What could possibly go wrong with this system????

Quote from the Air Force News:

"The DBIDS database interfaces with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System that provides us with an initial data dump of active-duty members, civilians, retired members and dependents within the base ZIP code area."

What if we are traveling and try to entry a base in another part of the country, but we don't live within the base ZIP code area?

This is scheduled to begin at Kirtland AFB, NM in Oct 2010.

This has been in effect at Luke AFB in Arizona since early June and works great. The only thing that you must go is update your military ID card to have it in the system. My wife and I did this at a table setup inthe BX and they took a picture which is inbedded into the fancy barcode in the back of the ID. It may just link it to the computer picture when the card is scanned at the gate.
