Prison Labor

Prison Labor was created by slmky
Back in July, renegade wrote a post that mentioned prison labor at Camp Atterbury. Maybe the National Guard has different rules, but I remember reading somewhere that prison labor could not be used in a FamCamp? I guessed it had something to do with not having prisoners near where children could be since they cannot be used by schools or day care centers. I've been trying to find it again, but can't remember where I read it. Does anyone know?

I believe you are correct, but don't know where to find out. I suspect we can ask security at any base. and will ask at FT Gordon today when I get there.

I don't believe any dangerous prisoner would be on work release. The two used at Atterbury were friendly pleasant people to be around. Did the jobs assigned and to my way of thinking may have picked up a few skills they could use later on. I never saw them near a spot unless they were assisting in a job or working on a rental rig. I was there with 3 daughters and not once felt uncomfortable. There are a few enlisted/officers and civvies I would not want around kids too. B)Call Nancy and see whats up but I would not worry just be a good parent and be watchful, just like you would outside the wire.

At the Fort Gordon Rec Area (Pointes West) they use soldiers working off a punishment under Article 15 to pick up trash, clean up, and things like that. I don't think they could use local prisoners to work on a Federal installation.

I worked for the prison system in Pa. I know that the inmates that we sent out to do work in the community where non violent and about to be paroled. They are always under supervision. These inmates cost us, as tax payers allot of money, so if we can get some work done with them so be it. Put them to work for their food and housing. Why pay someone else to do the job?

There were probably working off extra duty time from some administrative punishment. When I ran an AF Corrections facility I could not use inmates for labor around the public, but I could use them to do projects for other squadrons when I or another Corrections Person supervised them.
