Looking for some advise....planning a HOP with the Bride to Hawaii in late Summer or early Fall with destination of a cabin at Kilauea Military Camp, hopefully. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best point for leaving the CONUS and has anyone been to Kilauea?

Any advise or suggestions for visiting ANY sites on any of the Islands would be appreciated. Thanks.

Marty

If you can get to Phoenix, AZ. The 161st Air Refueling Group have a HOP going every other week. They are located at Sky Harbor Air Port.

My wife and I went there 38 years ago and then it was great. the cabin had fireplace and was really rustic but nice. They had a cafeteria style dining hall then but they have improved in the last years. There were great side trips on the island such as blacksand beach, rain forrest, macadamia nut orchard or grove. Naturally the trip to the volcano was the best.

It is a good trip went in March.

Thanks, the March timeframe looks best since most kids will be in school and not be jamming up the Hop circuit too badly, as they do during the summer months.

We love Hawaii. We were stationed in Honolulu (Sand Island) in 1971, then on Kauai (Kilauea Point Light Station (1972-74). There are military guest quarters at Barking Sands on Kauai's south-west side; wonderful if you want isolation, surfing beach, and quiet. But miles from restaurants and most tourist spots. Fairly close to Wailua Canyon and Kokee Park.

We have been to KMC on the Big Island four times, first in 1973 and last in 2006. It is a wonderful place right in Volcanoes National Park. They have many tours at reasonable prices. You can also rent bikes and ride around the park. There is a golf course near by too. The food is fairly good but I think it was better when the Navy was running the dining facility back in the 70s. There is a small bowling alley, very cheap, and a very nice bar which was very quiet when we were there. Prices have gone up a lot too. But we still love it and will go back again in a couple years. Have a great time.

One more thing - we caught a hop out of Travis last January (2010). We only waited three days for a flight but we were lucky. some people had been waiting for three weeks. Coming back was even better. We flew from Maui to Honolulu on a Wednesday, went directly to Hickam, and caught a flight three hours later. Good luck.
