I can still remember the months after the Iranian Hostage Crisis when we learned that the issue was essentially resolved by the Canadian embassy and that the Canadians had been hiding Americans for their safety and helping with other efforts to save American lives. Most of us would have happily given our first born to any Canadian who asked. My how things change with time.

On a slightly different subject, I have always wondered how Canadians and Mexicans feel about us United Statsians calling ourselves Americans all the time. Aren't Canadians and Mexicans, and Guatamallans and Chilleans and Uraguandians also Americans? Howcome we can get away with the usurption of title American to our exclusive use?

The base commander story has been heard loud and clear not only with our allies and retirees but also with our own active duty and reserve folks from other US services. It seems as if it is only the AF folks who "reserve" their bases for only AF personnel. It is not only the FAMCAMPS but also a multitude of other services. As active duty Coast Guard, me and many others have been denied access even at the front gate on our way to the clinic. Our leadership has been working hard with AF leadership to resolve the problem...and it is paying off. However, we've got to keep plugging away to keep the gate open for all eligible personnel. I can understand having the tiered system but keep the "personal" preference of the base commander at bay.

During 9/11 When all US airports were closed down many Canadian airports/cities hosted passengers and crew from US bound flights. The hospitality was amazing, surprising, inspirational and appreciated. By all means, Bring on the active and retired Canadian armed forces personnel.
Having said that, The United States of America is the only country on the American continents to identify itself as American in word or by deed. We can't usurp something that others didn't want or didn't see fit to take in the first place. If the Canadians changed their name to the Canadian Provinces of America or the Mexicans to the Mexican States of America they still wouldn't be Americans in word or by deed.

I'm going to call Ft Lewis and McChord AFB in the morning and ask. I think it would be wonderful to have our Canadian counterparts join us.
