Cross country and 'day tripping'. was created by farrout
I like the idea of staying at military bases but wonder if it is really worth the effort for over night stays.
I've heard many theories on RV travel models.
2/4/2 seems to be popular.
Two hundred miles or four hours driving per day
and
minimum 2 days stay at each place.
I'm not sure that would be practical for cross country trips, but it obviously addresses the care free life style I hope to have.
But, I may decide to just drive 300 or 400 miles per day for 4 or 5 days.
Considering the hassle to get on and off base, particularly with a pet, is it worth trying to stay at Mil. Fam Camps?
I could probably Walmart camp every other night and save a lot of money and hassle.

Guess it depends on what your goal is. We generally do a long day then a short one for a short stay. But that is because when going cross country from NE Ohio, there is not a lot to do or see (that we haven't covered or can't do in a day trip)on that first day. After that it is what we feel like doing. We always plan out the trip with several alternatives along the way....best to maintain a position of ridged flexibility.

Thanks, I agree, it's about enjoying the trip.

If the park is along your route and you can get a space it is generally cheaper then the civilian RV parks. I have found that if you don't make long range reservations you may not be able to get a space. I would not drive out of my way (25 or more miles) to stay at a military base. Just my opinion. I use Passport America when it is along the route. We just completed a three month 6000 mile trip and I didn't pay more then 30 dollars at any park we stayed in. I use RV park review.com to find RV spots along the route and their prices. We ask, when we check in,for any discounts and almost always get 10-15 percent off. It is surprising hpow many places will give a discount just for AARP,military, etc. If you are a member of Escapees, they have many RV parks around the country that offer outstanding discounts. CHeck out VFW's AMerican Legions etc for many have a hookup on the property for a small fee and sometimes only a donation. Hope this helps you, please remember it is only my opinion.

We use military campgrounds whenever they happen to be on our way somewhere and are not 10 or more miles out of our way. Not sure why you mention it is a hassle getting on and off base and we used to travel with 4 cats and had documents for them if needed but only once did we need to show them and that was at Patrick AFB. We use Passport America also for one or two night stays if conveniently located and getting 50% off is just about the best nightly rate going. As larrygranny 1 mentioned many campgrounds have numerous types of discounts so we always ask. To answer your question directly is it worth staying at military campgrounds for overnighters, in our opinion it is as you have access to the commissary, exchange, usually decent fuel prices and a feeling of security and the comradery of your fellow military men and women.

Depends on how far out of the way the base is. Never had any problems with pets. Spent 4 months on a trip out west in 2010 and stayed on military bases about 75%. It was great!
