We use the military campgrounds as an adjunct to everything else. If it fits in our travel plan we use them, if not we use what looks right for that day. Our long term stays of a week or more are usually in the military campgrounds because they are a lot less expensive.

We too stay at military facilities so long as they are convienent to our travels. For the most part I have found them to be pleasant and accomadating. Do your homework ahead of time and have their phone #'s so you can call early in the day to see if they take reservations, or not. Hassle getting on base is usually minimum. Sometimes the ID card is sufficient, sometimes they require obtaining a pass. The only one we stayed at for more than overnight was Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Fla. They were very nice and we were there 5 days. Their campground is outside of the secured base area so no issues at all.
Try them, you'll like them.
