Two friends and myself are planning to travel the U.S. by motorcycle next June. Mostly the upper half and the east coast. I'm trying to visit the states I have not ridden yet. We are all on Honda Goldwings and will camp where we can. My concern is access for the friends since they are not retired miitary. Anyone have comments and suggestions to help me in these decisions?

Good question. From what I have seen, each service seems to have their own requirements for access, especially on a motorcycle. I should immagine that you can vouch them into the campgrounds as guests. I think that they will have to gain entrance to the base as anyother visitor would. Some of that would depend on the motorcycle emotions of the base commander.

Suggest your call and check each base you plan on entering.

Are the motorcycle training course requirements pretty much the same DOD wide? Or do they vary base to base, post to post?

Pretty much required DOD wide. You can either take the course on base or show a card from an MSF approved course. Check with the local installation to be certian that they will accept off bse training.

I have found out each base is diferent. But most bases will let you get a one time pass for the other bikes. But they must have all the gear. Helmets ,vest, etc. Bases like Oceana Virg are not on the base. And some bases like CBJTC Stark Florida anyone can buy a pass for $20 and use the MWR .So call ahead and check that out. Hope this helps.

Makes sense to me that since the other two are not authorized to stay on base that you would just by-pass the bases and stay someplace else close. It would save a lot of time from having to get the passes at the gate and such.
