A friend of mine sent me this on a new CG for Fort Belvoir, VA

Plans for Fort Belvoir travel camp move forward

The southern end of Fort Belvoir near Tompkins Basin will have a very different look within the next four years after a new recreational vehicle park operated by Fort Belvoir Morale, Welfare and Recreation is built. ?It?s a four year phased project,? said Kristin Mayer, MWR community recreation chief. ?Whatever is built at the end of each phase will be fully operational.

The first phase will consist of building the infrastructure, water, and utilities.? The travel camp location was chosen because of the availability of shoreline near Tompkins Basin at the southern end of the post. ?This is a perfect site because it is on the water,? said Mayer. The plans for the park will include 52 RV pads, a dozen cabins; and a support building with a laundry facility, bathrooms, and other amenities. Permanent tent camps with running water facilities will also be set up. The registration desk will be in the Outdoor Recreational Center.

Other amenities of the travel camp will include wireless Internet. ?We know that RV customers are buying bigger and more sophisticated rigs,? said Kim Mills, Fort Belvoir MWR non-appropriated funds resource chief. ?They demand and we are happy to provide wireless Internet. We want to be a state-of-the-art travel camp.? A design firm has already been contracted to build the proposed travel camp. ?A firm has now got an award to design it [the travel camp],? said Mills. ?We have already met with them on site to give them an idea of the location and so they will know what our particular needs are. The design firm has done some other RV parks all over the United States and we are very pleased to get them to be our design company.?

Once the first phase of the travel camp project is completed, authorized MWR patrons will have complete use of the travel camp. Currently, the nearest Department of Defense travel camps that authorized MWR patrons have access to are at Fort Meade and at Andrews Air Force Base. In addition to the lack of a nearby travel camp, the building of a travel camp at Fort Belvoir is the result of intense local demand. ?When we looked at Fairfax County and Army surveys, we saw that people want and enjoy outdoor recreation activities: walking, hiking, jogging and picnicking,? said Mills. ?Our focus is on using this wonderful resource that we have and putting our limited resources towards improving this area for a lot of affordable, healthy activities.? A travel camp at Fort Belvoir has been in the works for a long time. ?This has been a plan for many years,? said Mills. ? It is the fruition of a lot of effort and we are happy to get it started.?

As an FYI on Fort Belvoir, it is the closest base to the Auto Train station, abut 20 min from the station. When I used to take the train south I would always stop at the base to kill time by hitting the BX, getting a haircut, or playing 9 holes.

Spoke with MWR today and they said CG should be opened by February 2013.

I am hoping it will not be taken over by permanent personnel who will be using it it for housing.

Good News concerning Fort Belvoir.
I just spoke with the Director of Outdoor Recreation at Belvoir.
They will be having a "soft"opening of the Campground in March 2013 and
a Grand opening in June. It will supposedly be a "Very Nice" facility with 52 pads all full hookups all capable of handling rigs up to 40'.
No permanent personnel and a two week maximum stay.
