Originally, users had the option of setting the "forever" option. Since then, I've made it the default without giving the user an option.
- If you logout when you leave the website, you'll be logged out when you return.
If you remain logged in when you leave the website, you'll be automatically logged back in when you return.
As you mentioned, it's just the expiration date of the cookie left on your system.
