Hi, Larry --

I'm sorry you didn't understand my review of Pelican Roost. Perhaps I can clarify: it's not the staff or volunteers or physical facilites that motivated my review, it's the overall attitude from management and some other campers that they are the "police." Hey, even the wooden figure in front of the camphost RV has an SP armband, which pretty well describes the attitude.

As I mentioned I found the staff and especially the volunteers to be very friendly and helpful. One volunteer went well out of his way to help us with some electrical problems and went so far as to loan us an electric extension cord. Office staff definitely helped when we arrived before our reservation started. Nice folks and a real asset to the CG.

Physical facilites are quite nice. Spaces are somewhat small but certainly adequate and price is reasonable for what you get, especially in the front row along the water. Power is very good.

Long Termers/LOS Not Enforced: When I see RV's with large wooden steps and small porches set up at their door I can only assume these folks don't move every 2 weeks - if ever. I saw several of these. LOS in the front row along the water appears to be enforced pretty well, but the rest of the CG has several rigs that are obviously there for more than 2 weeks.

Dogs: I repeat that dogs are allowed but not welcome. "The manager is anal about dogs" is a direct quote from one of the paid staff. My wife was reported (and we were threatened with being thrown out of the park - again) because our small dog was on her lap but not on a leash! The dog was clearly restrained and no threat to anyone, but . . . one of the local CG police felt it necessary to report us. It is a simple fact that the manager has posted, in writing, a threat to bar you from not only this CG but ALL military CG if you don't pick up after your dog. I mean, am I the only one that thinks this is a wee bit extreme? What's next? 30 Days in the brig? It's a reflection of the overall attitude.

The POLICE!: A casual passerbuy/self appointed CG policeman instructed me on what I could put in the dryer and what I couldn't. Others "helped" us with other instructions (which were frequently wrong) even tho they had no authority what-so-ever to do so. It appears the SP armband is taken seriously. After the first few days we always felt like there were half a dozen people looking over our shoulders waiting for us to violate the multitude of rules so they could threaten to throw us out of the CG again.

We were informed of/threatened with rule violations that could get us thrown out of the CG on at least 4 separate occasions. I mean sheesh!!! We've stayed at a large number of famcamps and have never had this problem anywhere else.

Bottom line is it's not the location, facilites or staff that turned us off - it's the attitude. The overall attitude is perhaps best exemplified by the unnamed "manager" that demanded Larry take the other CG off the web page.

Bottom Line: If you like a VERY VERY structured situation with everyone enforcing even the slightest rule - real or perceived - except for those that management finds inconvenient like LOS, this is the place for you. It's not for us.

Pat

Pat,
We have stayed there and do not fully agree with your perception. However I do agree with the dog policy. You admit that your were knowingly breaking the rule buy having the dog outside without a leash (I believe you said on your wife's lap). We have a dog and I fully approve the leash law. It is not only to contain your precious pet from attacking, also can be use to restrain it if another pet is threatening it. I have seen the mildest mannered dog (even a seeing eye (service dog), get upset when another dog comes by and is aggressive.
So stop breaking the laws, and complaining. Obey them, and live peacefully amoung us all.

Let me be as tactful as I can here! We have been here many times over the past 8 years and this campground is like a deed restricted neighborhood (of which I would not live in). There are about 10 +or- units at any one time that have MWR staff in them and they do not move during there stay, so it likes like they are long termers. They can make you feel unwelcome as they are a clique and we all remember them from our school days. As for the dog comments, these MWR staff walk their dogs on a leash through your site, onto your pad, yes your pad, and one time we opened our door and almost hit one of them! We go here when it empties out and always enjoy ourselves. Some of the problems people encounter here are because the office, laundry and social area are all in the same building and one or more of the MWR staff are in the building and it does make you feel like you are being watched. As for being asked to leave, most military and private campgrounds state in their campground rules you can be asked to leave if you do not follow the rules, this is not unique, we all know what we should and should not do. We have not been there in a while so signs posted about these rules must be new. We always try and keep an open mind and laugh off this silliness and tell ourselves they try and justify their position when we are Mayport. Ask anyone (not MWR staff) the next time you go there what their thoughts are about so many staff for one little campground and you will have a good laugh too.

i didn't mean to start a war about the place. i was there for 10 days and used all of the area. noone, i repeat no one brothered me in any way. in the landry area i only found good conversation. out in the park i had the opportunity to talk with several of the folks and all were plesant to me. I found woodie to be enforcing the rules, several had to move to the grass while i was there because they used up there time. I don't know what to think. perhaps i was just lucky, but i can only give the place 5 stars in every cat. if someone wants to stay longer they have the new long term area on the other side of the airfield.

I have stayed at Pelican Roost many times. The staff has always found a place for me on those times when I had no reservation. The campground is in a great location on a good base. I have never had a complaint. The free wifi is a big plus, the restrooms are always clean, and it is a great place to stay.
