Steve,

I read your file RE Sigsbee very good and informative. My wife is retired DoD and we have visited Sigsbee two years ago and will be staying at Sigsbee late Feb and early March 2011. Do you think at this time of the year is the rotation usually 14 days???

Couple of questions for you can retired DoD use the restaurants on base, PX, the gas station, and or rent boats??? Also we have a Champion portable generator NOT a Honda but it works really well it is rated at 3000 watt and 68db, per the manual hope they will allow me to run it.

If you are down there next winter hope to see you down there

Thanks again
Rich Bowers

Thanks Rich. First let me emphasize that my missive was based on our first and only visit...there are folks here that do it year after year and more qualified than I. Mine was simply a data point to address the questions that we had as newbies.

Based on last year, I'm betting that it would be at least 14 day rotation. It didn't thin out until after Easter and I was told, that is usual. Easter 2011 is 24 Apr...that's late so the migration probably will be weather dependent.

The bar/restaurant needs business so I doubt that anyone will ask for an ID...they never did for us. I don't know the rule for the boat and PX but I doubt that they'd honor it (the boat may because they need the business too). 90% of the time the gas station isn't staffed so there's no one to check. There isn't much difference in prices on base than downtown so I wouldn't sweat it. The gas station is very convenient for RV's (same price as town) so I'd try on base.

There were generators of other brands, and some were noisy, so you'd have no problem...the 2000i's are just the most common.

Do you have base decals for your vehicle(s) from somewhere? I don't know how they handle that if you don't. The DoD Civ's I know there had them. The pass and registration office is on Boca Chica which would be a hassle to have to turn around. I'd call the office and ask if you don't have them.

We plan to be there so sure we'll meet somewhere. Steve

Stayed at Thrombo two years ago. Nice place. Close to town via the USCG gate. They have laundry, showers and pool.

But, has the camp host(s) improved there? Same ones that have been there for years?

The ones we dealt with seemed to "take care of their own buddies."

They would look the other way for their buddies but when anyone else did something out of line they were right on them.

Do they still permit people to drain black tanks into the open manhole covers? Which is against the FamCamp rules and base regulations. That was not only unhealthy but a safety issue with opened/lifted up manhole covers.

Did Sigsbee add anymore full hook up spaces?

Again, with the host at Thrombo, seemed to be some "favors" done at Sigsbee on the rotating. We had few friends who stayed at Sigbee and they told us about this.

As I noted in my paper HERE, I know nothing about Trumbo. There hasn't been any additions of hookups at Sigsbee. The hosts at Sigsbee last year were fantastic....we won't be there until next week. As to shenanigans and as I stated in the paper, I think the rotation is run well above board. The list is posted everyday and folks eagle eye it in micro detail. I've seen newbies get choice sites and old hands get lousy sites. I never heard any serious complaining: certainly nothing more than we have all heard since the evolution of duty rosters. JMHO.

Belgique, thanks for that update and info.
When you get there can you further update regarding added spaces at Sigsbee, anything new at Trumbo etc.
Many thanks.

As we said when I worked for the County.. there is a big difference between storm water and waste water (storm water management is not a bad place to work) ..

If the manhole is waste water the only issue with opening a manhole is someone falling in (or a rule/regulation but that's only a issue if one gets caught).. now if they are dumping into a storm water manhole, that's a big no-no in everyone's book.
