Hurlburt FamCamp moving? was created by dbert513
 I've been talking with one of the guys at the marina at Hurlburt and he tells me that there's a plan to put MFH where the FamCamp is now and moving FamCamp to someplace near the Commando MFH complex. Has anyone heard anything similar? I'm tending to believe it for two reasons...1) I've seen surveyors around and 2) it's just the kind of fiscal stupidity that the government seems to use.
The Hurlburt FamCamp hasn't been maintained very well. There's been one site (#25) that has been inop due to bad circuit breakers for about 3 or 4 months now. The excuse is that there's no money to replace the breakers. Many sites here lack a usable grill or picnic table. I'm thinking that since they plan on closing and moving this place, why put money in to it? The FamCamp is adjacent to the Santa Rosa sound for those that have never been there. It's susceptible to storm damage and flooding during severe storms. Why put housing in an area like that?
Any thoughts or words from anyone else? I think it may be time to write to my congressman about this waste of resources. Why not build the new MFH next to existing MFH?

I've done some further checking (with senior officers (O-6s))and they've confirmed that Hurlburt FamCamp WILL be replaced with Military Family housing. It's all linked to the privatization of the housing units here. I haven't been able to get a timeline on it, but with the pace of things in the 'gub'mint', it ain't gonna be anytime soon. The master plan also has a new "Flyover" being built outside the main gate on Hwy 98. The way I understand it is, they're going to raise Hwy 98 so that traffic transiting between the main base and the soundside areas won't have to cross Hwy 98, they'll simply drive under it! Anyone wanna take bets as to how long it's gonna take to fund THAT project? OK...I'll leave that out for comment.

I asked at the office when I was there in January. They only said that if the FamCamp does move, it will be next year. They either don't know anything for sure or just don't want to say. An E-7 at Eglin said he heard the Hurlburt FamCamp is just plain closing. No one seems to want to go on the record with anything definate. The 50amp spots at Hurlburt seem to stay pretty full. When someone leaves, the spot is usually filled in 24-48 hours. You'd think they would be more upfront with people. You'd also think that if this was happenning next year, that they'd be breaking ground for the new site already.

Found this on a real estate blog site:
"With the exception of the homes that will be built at FAMCAMP, Hurlburt Field will build and renovate military housing on existing sites.
The family camping area will be moved to land off Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd."
The full article can be found at: trustplatinum.blogspot.com/2010/01/eglin...ization-running.html
This is all part of the housing privitization project for Eglin and Hurlburt. Per the area newspaper, NWF Daily News, more public meetings were held last month about the privitization issue.

Thanks for that link. I asked specifically about the FamCamp issue at a recent meeting of the Hurlburt Advisory Council. Here's the reply:
"Final Response: Fam Camp will be moved near Commando Village to make room for more housing on Sound Side. May be 1 or more years before that move begins. CLOSED."
The linked article was very interesting reading. I still don't understand why they don't build the MFH near existing MFH (Commando Village) and improve or even expand the existing FamCamp. There is a definite need and desire for the FamCamp and if they did make improvements or expand, I have no doubt they would re-coup the majority of the cost within 3-5 years.
I sure hope the fight against privatization continues. I truly think the military is headed in the wrong direction with that plan.
