Hurlburt FamCamp moving?

One does wonder about the double switch, but here are a couple of thoughts about it.
There are big high power towers over by MLK Jr. Dr.. Don't remember how close they are to Commando Village, but those power lines may make the land less desirable for building. Hence, put the FamCamp in the less desirable area. Moreover, land on the sound is usually highly valued.
On the other hand, it's an excuse to get a new FamCamp. Hurlburt is usually full or close to it, at least the 50 amp sites. Few if any improvements have been made in the past few years except that a few of the old 30 amp sites are now 50 amps, but only here and there.
I wonder how many sites the new camp will have. Also because of the distance between the new location and the Marina, I wonder if the FamCamp will have its own office or at least a rec building that campers can use as a gathering place, even when the office is closed.

Good points. My thoughts are, they've already had to replace a few houses that were soundside...the G.O. and Sr officer quarters right next to the water....after a hurricane. I'm not sure which one, but it may have been Ivan or Katrina. So why would you want to put more housing in an area that's already susceptible to flooding and severe weather damage? Also, much of this area is wetlands to begin with. FamCamp is also very close to the south end of the flightline. There's already lots of noise here when they do engine runs. I was thinking that this would be in the FAA safety zone, but I did some research and I think that's not a factor. So, bottom line, they plan on destroying an existing facility, building something else, then rebuilding that former facility in another location. Sounds like the government way of doing business! On the other hand, it WOULD be nice to have an office on-site. I've found that the worst campgrounds are those that are "absentee-managers".

So less you think I gave up, here's some more info. Here's a link to Eglin AFB site that contains a link to documents concerning the Military Housing Privatization Initiative (MHPI).

Not to worry about OPSEC...this is a public site. They're going to demolish ALL current housing units and build from scratch. Is anyone else disturbed by this news? I'm all for better housing for the troops, but this just doesn't seem to make much sense to me. There's lots of available land near the current Commando Village , which by the way is only leased housing and that lease expires early in 2012. OK..I'll hop off my soap box for a bit and let someone else reply. I'm very open to differing opinions and interpretations. Thanks!

Actually the move to the location near the Commando Village would be a plus. There would be less noise from aircraft operations, as the current location is immediately adjacent to the runway approach. Commando Village is closer to civilian shopping and fuel, and not too far from the East Gate. Getting to the base proper would be simpler as it would not require crossing busy U.S. 98.
The power line right of way would remain clear, construction is not allowed under the lines for obvious reasons.

NOTICE TO THOSE PLANNING ON VISITING HURLBURT FAMCAMP: If you're planning a visit just before or just after Labor Day 2011, call ahead to see if there will BE a FamCamp at Hurlburt. Word from the folks at the Marina (they manage the FamCamp) is that the Mission Support Group has made a conscious decision not to make any improvements or repairs to the facility. My guess is that if something at one site fails, the occupants will be told to move to another site. They have yet to begin work on the 'new' FamCamp near Commando Village, so there will probably NOT be a place at Hurlburt to set up an RV after Labor Day. Several folks that have ome to Hurlburt in the past have skipped it this year. Anyone else out there have any comments or questions?

Just retired and moved back home to the Hurlburt area. This is the first I've heard of this, but being stationed out west will cause that. I'm suprised that they plan to buld MFH where the FamCamp is at HRT. The FamCamp sits directly under short final for runway 36 there at Hurlburt. Having been a flyer for 25+ years, most of them there at Hurlburt the Military and FAA TERPS requiremnts for incursions into the flight plan for Runway 36 would exclude any buildings there. Not that silly requirements like that will actually get in the way of them doing what they want.
As a side note; there is plenty of land for building a new FamCamp near Commando Village. The high tension lines are well north of the housing area and would not be an issue. As an added benifet, the location would keep camper away from all the congestion and traffic there on Hwy 98. It's also closer to Wally-World and resturants and the back gate which is very close to the BX/Commissary.
It is sad to see such a well kept secret going away though.
