Phoenix area camping

Phoenix area camping was created by dddlin
We are in San Antonio right now, heading to El Paso on Monday. Then into New Mexico before heading towards Phoenix. Any suggestions on campsites in Phoenix? Everything seems so expensive. I couldn't find any BLM info or Corps of Eng sites, and of course, no military. Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't know of ANYplace cheap in Phoenix, but there are a few options depending on how far out you're willing to drive.
Cave Creek State Park
Lost Dutchman State Park
McDowell Mountain Regional Park
Westworld of Scottsdale (City)campground
Tortilla Flat campground (US Forest Service)
*There's the Escapees park out at Congress.
*There are several Elks Lodges with camping if you're a member of Elks.
*Don't know about VFW - never looked - but it may be an option.
Finally, you might give our moderator and president-for-life Larry a buzz. He's been staying at a place in Queen Creek that might fill the bill for you.

Thanks. I'll look into VFW and will drop Larry a quick note. I think we will have to join the Elks

How far out of Phoenix are you willing to go? Do you want northside, westside, eastside, or southside of Phoenix? How long are you going to stay? Do you want drycamp (free) or hookups? Do you belong to Passport America?

Hey Larry, I'm going to sorta hijack the thread, but without changing the subject. I find myself needing to stay longer in the Phoenix area also and would be interested in any suggestions.
I'm looking for places on the northwest side within reasonable distance of Scottsdale, specifically the Mayo Hospital on the north side, and their Clinic on Shea Blvd. I know about the Passport America parks in Mesa - trouble with them is the limitations on length of stay and their PA rates generally don't start until April. I'll be looking into the VFWs myself now. As you know, we can boondock -- so long as it doesn't get tooooooo hot!
Anyone else got anything?

We have friends who need to frequently visit the Mayo clinic. They stay at the McDowell Regional Park . Dry camping is $10/night or W/E is $20/night. Usery Mountain Regional Park is a little further out, but close to Loop-202 for easier access to the clinics. Both of these parks have a dump and the prices are the same for both. But I think they have a 14 day stay limit.
A bit farther away, but not too bad, is an older commercial RV Park that we've stayed at many times. Carefree Manor is a Passport America park with no limitations on dates or length of stay. PP rate is around $14/night for FHU. It's not too far from Freeway Loop-202, making getting to the clinics easier.
I'm sure there's many other choices, but these are what we're familiar with.
