Me too ... like to see this keep up with costs, but it usually lags behind. Better than last year at least -- will spend first one Jan 1st -- take wife to dinner, maybe will get lucky -- :-) M44

Military.com has it at 3.9% and Prez has signed the bill for the military one. I don't know what SS is doing at this point....I agree with others, that the calculations seem to be not in keeping with actual costs of goods and services. At least with SS, they have a weird way of coming up with figures. I am thankful though for both the military and ss retirement incomes....

This is only part of the story. Also according to military.com:

The 2009 military retired pay cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be 5.8%. This increase, which goes into effect on December 1, 2008, also applies to SBP annuities, Social Security checks, and VA disability and survivor benefits. Retirees will see the increase in their January, 2009 checks.

Note: This annual Cost-of-Living-Adjustment is NOT in anyway related to the annual military pay raise for active duty and reserve servicemembers. In fact, this years COLA increase is larger than the 2009 military pay raise of 3.9%.

Ooops, My error. The article I had referred to WAS the active duty, I guess. I didn't know that retirees have a different table. Silly me. I assumed only 1 COLA fits all. Regardless, I am truly grateful for both Social Security and Retiree advancing by 5.8%..although if Medicare follows their "normal" routine, their monthly premiums will take up that 5.8% SS in short order.

There is no monthly premiums increase for 2009.
