My wife and I are getting ready to start a bicycle tour from Virginia to Key West. Does anyone know if there are DOD campgrounds on the East coast that allow tents? How do I find out which ones do or do not?

I've never seen any "Tenters Keep Out" signs on campground facilities. I know Oak Grove at Pensacola has a separate area for tenters and I've seen them use the restrooms and laundry. So don't know where that "rumor" came from.

A couple years ago, The Army Times consulted with me and wrote an article about tent camping at military campgrounds.

I did some research on this website and my copy of Military Living's Military RV, Campground & Outdoor Recreation Around the World and found that most of the CGs on the east coast between Virgnia and Florida allow tents. This includes Onslow Beach, Fort Fisher and New River MCAS in North Carolina; Shaw AFB and Charleston AFB FamCamps in South Carolina; Pelican Roost and Patrick AFB in Florida. To me, the best militay camping guide is this website.

You are so right there is nothing better than this site. This is a wife of a military retiree writing here and there is also nothing better than all of you who served and now take the time to provide us with all the valuable info on this site. Thank you for making it easier for me the co-pilot and trip planner to find us safe and fun places to stay.
