Back on topic - personally, I rarely make reservations. I'd prefer ALL military campgrounds be first-come with a 2 or 3 week stay limit. But also have an overflow to rotate in and out of. After 2 or 3 weeks, move into overflow and go onto a waiting list (if needed) to rotate back into a FHU site. This method is fair to everyone, allowing everyone a chance to utilize the FHU sites. Even at large snowbird locations, you would only need to wait in overflow for a few days (5 or 7 max). Most of us have self-contained RV's, so a week being self-contained is no problem. But I know this isn't everyone's "cup of tea" either.

Larry, your right. In fact, that is what Sigsbee in Key West, FL does. When the main CG fills up and additional people arrive then those the longest in FHU have to rotate out to overflow. We go there alot and have had to start in verflow only twice and then only for a couple of days before we got our 2 weeks at FHU. Normally, we don't make reservations a week/month/6 months in advance. We call a few days ahead and inquire about availability.
Off Subject:
Recently, the camp host has been given funding and permission to improve overflow so that it is not a total dry stay. Everyday the camp host is touring the MCG and if you are outside he/she will stop and talk awhile. Another host does the same thing in overflow, mainly because overflow is not conviently near the main CG. If there is any problem the host is all over it without delay. I had an occasion to need some emergency repairs and the host found someone who had some special tools that were needed and kept in touch with me in case I needed additional assistance.

Larry's comment to me, makes the most sense. I understand that some MCG's don't have overflow, that might cause a problem in some cases.

Even if there's no overflow, it could easily be policy to just 'drycamp' somewhere nearby -- parking lot or something, so you're not stuck for an evening if you show up. I've done that on occasion and never once been "ordered off the base ".

Good point M44...I like the idea of having the ability to dry camp at least overnight when the CG is full. This is also a safety issue considering the driver may have driven all day and to try and find another place when tired and unfamiliar with the area could be detrimental. At least the overnight dry camping allows for some rest to move on the next day if need be.
