say thanks to the gate guards. was created by rouxster
While staying at Quantico Marine Base this november we had some cold cold days/nights...so after leaving the main base and going to the recreation area I would get hot chocolate at Starbucks in the exchange (they would make it extra hot for the trip) and deliver two cups to the two guards. Besides me feeling good those 'kids' smiled and said THANKS!! I said it was from an RV'er.....so how about we remember the military guards at the gate(the rent-a cops can buy their own ) with hot chocolate/coffee on many a cold night and say "Merry Xmas or Thanks for guarding us"-this is from an RV'er. RV'ers sure would rank high on their list!

Great Idea, although more and more bases have rent a cops, the coffee, hot chockolate sounds like a great jesture.

Planted my boots many a cold night on the Main or Back Gate. Even now after nearly 50 years I can still feel the warmth of those pleasant gestures. The coffee and hot chocolate were great , most appreciated were the Homemade Holiday treats (especially the rum balls) . Remember in todays world of SECURITY FIRST be sure to include some type of identification with any homemade items you may drop off for the Guards. This will make the them more comfortable knowing from whom the treats came. If you have the capability you might consider calling the Law Enforcement Flight Commander and see if you can make a cake or cookies.. Maybe the Military Campground has a Annual Holiday Project to support and would appreciate volunteers.

As A gate guard for many years, I just want to say thanks to you for considering those folks. Most of the time, people dont want us cops hanging around unless things are going bad. It gets a little lonely out there at three am and no one to talk with , but your radio. I always felt good when people stopped just to say hello, or how you doing..it made my day or night. So thanks for stopping to take care of them. CMS Security Forces. 76-02

Folks, I agree that the young military gate guards deserve the very best, but remember that the so called rent a cops in the previous post are there to secure the base also. The majority of them are retired military also. I think that if you are considering to take something to the gards then all should be included. There are very few bases that have active duty on the gate anymore. Happy New Year.

I agree-great idea but I didn't limit it to active-duty. We just spent a month at Kings Bay NSB, GA. ON day 1, not 10 minutes after arr'ing, I was on the phone to the active duty SP's. I asked how I commend and say thnx to the gateguard on duty ? The NCOIC (Chief Petty O) took my info, was very interested & appreciative. He gave me the Rent-a-cop honcho and I emailed him a atta' boy for that gate guard on duty. He wrote back later, sent it up his chain; that man wrote back and again up the chain w/ another reply. Each one told me that at NSB King's Bay their guards are scrutinized & backgrd ck'ed like no other regular DOD base that they know of. They told me that 99% of them were retired military cops/SPs/MPs, etc. And as I suspected, each one said thnx because, they too need good evaluation material for their reports & never get it. They do hear complaints, not commendations. The active duty Navy chief & the rent-a -cop honcho told me that they did not know of a single "atta' boy" report for their guards. So, I felt good and after 30 + days there, I still believe that these guys at Kings bay were the sharpest guards I'd ever seen. (We've been to Quantico too and many other USMC bases. Any USMC base is -of course at the top )
