GOLF CARTS ON MILITARY BASES

I am seeking insight into any policy, retrictions and/or regulations about the use of golf carts at FamCamps therefore on base.

My wife of 54 years is handicapped and using a golf cart to serve our local mobilty needs when at a military CG makes such sense that I thought, before spending alot of money on the cart and a utility trailer to haul it, I would need to make sure they're legal on base. My Army retired Son-in-law saw the use of them by personnel at Luke AFB.

Wondering if anyone has any input or sugesstions as to how to find out whether they can be used on base.

I am already preparing letters tom the bases we currently frequent to ask aboout their policy. But I thought this could also help others who have similar interest in this matter.

Replied by a Guest on topic Re:GOLF CARTS ON MILITARY BASES
In 5 years of traveling at a lot of MCG's I have yet to see any "golg carts". I have seen plenty of "Rove a round" type carts like the ones at most supermarkets. A friend of mine who likes to take his golf cart says that there a lot of civilian CG's that have restrictions on them. IE. proof of insurance, electric only (no gasers), proof of registration (I didn't know that they had to be registered, maybe it was just for that area or state?).
His sits in his garage a lot.
Be sure to post your feedback from your letters.

I'm not sure I completly understand your question - do you want to use the golf cart strictly within the campground area or out on the base roads? Here at Ellsworth, use of the carts are allowed both within the CG and on base. However, on the base roads the cart requires lights and a large reflective triangle on the rear. The base road requirement in-place here would seem to be a logical requirement on any base allowing carts on their roads. If you are using the small, mobility-type carts, then they are allowed, but are restricted to the sidewalks and are subject to the normal rules required of pedistrians. Hope this helps you.

At Onslow Beach on Camp Lejeune, golf carts are allowed in the campground and on the 4 mile stretch of the beach road in the recreation area. Many folks bring their own here and the campground housekeeping staff and camp hosts all use golf carts because of the spread out nature of our lodging in the recreation area.

They are not allowed across the bridge over the Inter-coastal Waterway onto the base roads.

The technical term for what you're looking for is "LSV's" (Low Speed Vehicles) and there are regs that cover those. They usually use golfcarts, John Deere carry-alls and some "4 wheelers"around different parts of the many bases. These are usually regulated at a local level and you should be able to get info from the "cops" there. Most use is regulated to areas with a very slow speed limit so they won't interfere with traffic flow. But, again, the info you're looking for should be availible at the "cop shop" or, since we're mostly talking about camp grounds, the folks that run the specific CG may also have info.

Thanks John. I have written letters to three bases in the Southern CA area that we would like to go to most. To date, I haven't received a response. Thanks again. George
