Vehicle Searches by MPs or Rental Guards.

I retired nearly 20 years ago and started with the "Air Police" in 1963. Even then vehicles were subject to RVI and at times we went to ID checks and not just vehicle stickers. I have not problem showing my ID each time I enter a base/post and they can do an inspection of my RV anytime they want. I just look at it as cost of being free. Those troops and civilians doing the checking/inspecting are doing a fine job and I'll not be one to object.

Please re-read my posting. I retired more than 20 years ago. I agree with your general statements. However, I have to assume at this point that federal policy always trumps state laws regarding privacy, so I may as well "bail out" of this forum. Sayonara!

There is absolutely no question about that ...military bases are federal installations/property and therefore federal law prevails. That is true with such things as firearms too ..ie. in states that permit concealed carry of handguns, military installations do not even if you have a valid state permit. Longuns/shotguns are treated differently than handguns on some installations. We traveled down the East Coast last year with a shotgun on board, and stayed at several military famcamps. I normally called ahead to ask what they required. What amazed me is that some installations want you to merely declare a firearm in your POV (which includes an RV) and then go about your business, some (like Andrews) will physically escort you directly to the Armory to store the firearm while others will give you 72hrs etc to do so, and a few say "if it is a in a POV, there is no need to declare it."

There definitely is some variance between installations and/or from day to day at any one installation as to entry search procedures, particularly for RVs. You must be in compliance with state law on any number of issues when you arrive at the gate, but at that point you leave the state and enter federal property where federal law prevails.

SSGTorg wrote: I am keen to know of anyone experiencing any searches by MPs with K9 sniffers, or other "board and search" operations of any Veteran's RV who holds a valid ID card. Mine authorizes all MWR and general support agencies of any base. I just want to know if there are any whacked-out, paranoid commanders who either have such a policy or allow such policies.

I would also hope that those "whacked-out, paranoid commanders" are doing their jobs and making sure that we, and our servicemen and women, are safe while on military bases. (Nidal Hassan had a valid Armed Forces ID).

Seems to me SSGTorg is more concerned with getting busted holding POT than base security ... "medical marijuana" license is not always what it appears to be - and is a legalizing "get stoned" and not get busted for it in several states - CA, MA, OR to name a few.

And, while I believe pot is no more or less dangerous then having a beer or wine, etc. - what needs to happen in this country is control it like alcohol, tax it like alcohol, and keep it out of the hands of our kids. It's a recreation drug and should be available for that purpose ... and not force its users into criminal lifestyle.

Reminds me of the infamous Eliot Ness and the prohibition days, or the days of moonshine production in the south. We have better things to do in this day and age than spend police and security revenues busting pot smokers.

The choice is simple, either I come on post and be subject to be searched or stay off post and not worry about it, but those should remember the posted sign at the entrance of all vehicles are subject to be searched at any time, aaaa because you are on Federal Government property.
