A nice perk! I guess the question is: How does one find out if the particular dining hall is open to retirees? Does/should the camp host know? It would be nice if dining hall access info was included during check-in rather than go to the place and try one's luck ....

Asking the host should help, but they don't always know.

If known, the Dining Hall Facility Policy is available on this website on the campground's information page. It's near the bottom above the weather. However, this is a new feature of the website and is currently only on about 15 locations. Let me know (or post here) if you discover a location that allows retirees to eat at the Mess Hall.

But do any of them serve REAL SOS? I.e., a grease layer on top, real ground meat, and a get you moving for the day taste :)

I sure miss that. In the dark ages, Ft Monmouth had a monthly SOS contest for all the messhalls (oh, not politically correct..Dining Facilities) where the GO's and DV's would come and judge the SOS and extol (humorously) how messhall SOS had contributed to their success.

OHHH, SOS! While stationed on Okinawa in the early 60s, we used to travel down to the Airman’s club on Kadena AB about once a week for plate of SOS. Two large biscuit halves, smothered with a large ladle-full of the most delicious SOS ever, and an egg (fried or scrambled) to top it off. Twenty-five cents – one quarter of a dollar!!! Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Those were the days! :woohoo:

We have found that the USAF chow halls are the best.. but.. for some meals, evening supper almost always.. they have tiered pricing.. first remember that every thing is ala-cart, the more you take the more you pay.. then remember that there is tiered pricing. Let's say that tonight they have T-bone steak, meatloaf and fried chicken.. if you select the T-bone your bill will be almost double than selecting the meatloaf or chicken.. We always select the "B" feature (the USAF chow is good but the "A" feature is still chow hall fare) and have always gotten change from $6.00..

As a follow up to comment about being able to eat at Mayport Coast Guard Station we did eat there twice and it was $9.10 for two people and the food for lunch was quite good. Not as good as on AFB but will go again when in the area.
