Question about Eligibility

I think I pretty much know the answer to this one but figured I would throw it out there anyway..
My husband passed away very suddenly a few weeks ago. We had plans made for a trip up the east coast, staying at alot of famcamps along the way. He was really looking forward to Parris Island, where he went to boot camp in 1967.
He had 100% disability and that is why we were entitled to use the famcamps. I am assuming I will no longer be eligable to use them. Is this correct?

ksully, I'm sorry about your loss. I don't know if I can help you or not. Did your husband have a retired (blue) military ID card and you a dependant (tan) card? If so, did you get to keep your card? If you have a dependent retired card you are eligble to do just about anything, including staying in military campgrounds. I think the only thing you can not do is fly space A on military aircraft.

Sorry too for your loss.

I believe you said 100% disabled (but not retired?). As a surviving spouse, you will have FamCamp benefits and commissary privileges (and other benefits) thru the VA too.

You need to contact a VA office immediately as you have survivor benefits that include medical, monthly financial, and others, including FamCamps.

If you want direct info, and are willing to share some private info, send me a PM and I will direct you how to do it. Sometimes it depends on if your husband was 100% T&P, or 100% UI with Chapt 61 ... benefits vary.

Any VA office will be able to answer Q's too, or any VSO if you are members of DAV or VFW etc.

Don't delay tho, as it takes time to process all the documents.

Thanks for the info. My husband wasn't retired but 100% total & permanent. I have contacted the VA and filled out the paper work to get some benefits. I didn't talk to them about famcamps. Not sure if I will ever want to RV again but at least I know I can look into famcamps if I do. Can't imagine doing it alone. We had 2.5 years fulltiming and loved every minute.

If you get the benefits approved (Which 100% T&P you will) you'll get an ID card for commissary and famcamps and other benefits - a monthly pension payment of a portion of his disability money each month (know this is NOT
taxable at fed and state level)

You might have a choice between cash settlement now, OR, a monthly - my advice - take the monthly, expecially if you're younger than retirement age.

You also get CHampVA - which is medical for life, or if you are Medicare age, it's your secondary payer. And that's a good benefit, so make sure you apply for that.

And, don't give up camping / RV ... you can still have fun,see places, and meet other folks that have the same interests. Genie and I camp all over the USA and meet new friends, and you can come and sit by our fire anytime, if you need compamy. B&G

BTW: If you get rated Chapt61 ... you get the GI education benefit for your self and any kids you have. That means about $50k each for college if you have kids and they attend ...
