Not going up this year but did it in 2006 and got a little info. Lots of boondocking opportunities even for big rigs. Check out the VFWs up there as most offer very, very low cost camping opps and some are pretty nice (like the one in Wasilla). Many of the VFW are listed in the MilePost, which is an essential item. Elks is another great cost-saving option - highly recommend the view from the one in Homer. The info on the campgrounds on this site is very good. And whatever you do, don't forget to pick up the Alaska Toursaver coupon book - best $100 you'll spend all summer! Check it out at www.toursaver.com

Do take the time to visit the Alaska Veteran's Memorial on the Parks Highway. It is one of the best of its kind we've ever seen. Very peaceful and if you're lucky Mt. McKinley/Denali will be out the day you're there.

Enjoy your trip up -- we had a ball on ours.

Mustang03 -
Thanks for the information. I am just starting to put together an itinerary so will include Vet Memorial. Thanks for the VFW suggestion - will definitely try it. We like stopping at VFWs for a drink and some local chatter.
We are thinking of parking the coach and toad at Richardson and taking the ferry out the Aluetions (sp?) as far as we can. Did you make it to Kodiak? Did you cross the Artic Circle? Both are on our list.

Thanks again,
Linda

We didn't try the Arctic Circle run -- just raining too darn much at the time we were in Fairbanks. And didn't look into the Aleutian thing because we couldn't leave the pets for that long. But sounds interesting. I' pretty sure the ferrys run out to Kodiak Is.

Attached a pic of the veteran's memorial. It faces out towards Denali. If there's a tour bus there when you get there, wait for them to leave before you go over from the parking lot -- it will be worth it.

One last suggestion would be 'take your time'! We left the Lower 48 in May and didn't come back until September. Got snowed on going both ways, but worth it for the additional time it bought us. Hey, if you're going to spend the money and time to go that far, make it count!

We were in Alaska in 2006, July and you didn't miss anything by not going to the Arctic Circle. We went and it rained the entire time we were going and coming. When we got there the only thing there was a concrete monument stating it was the Arctic Circle and a latrine with some picnic tables. A long trip for nothing as far as I and my wife is concerned. At least we can say we were there. We also had a 11 yr. old grand son with us and he was so bored with the traveling.
