This is a known random problem with the forums. It only happens periodically and not to everyone. Actually, you're only the second person I've heard having the problem (besides me). In a day or so, your problem will be gone. I say "your problem", as it doesn't effect everyone. The Recent tab is currently working fine for me, but could stop working for me this evening. We're working on a solution.
Becuae it's random and only for a few users at a time, it has to do with a "cookie" that is written to your computer. Once this cookie expires, you're good to goo again (at least for awhile).
If you encounter this problem, you can still see what's new based on the color of the folder when looking at the categories view. Not a fix, but at least it's a work around.
