??? ??? ???

Users who have been receiving my eNewsletter know I'm always on the lookout for "secret" military campgrounds. These are campgrounds that are not well known, or advertised. We've uncovered almost a half dozen of these secret campgrounds in the past year.

I'm now on the trail of another secret campground at Mayport Naval Base, FL. I'm not talking about Pelican's Roost RV Park, but a second military campground there. I'm looking for confirmation and additional information on the following report:

In case you have not been notified there is a second campground at Mayport Naval Base. It is an old mobile home park on base called Osprey Cove for long term campers, military personnel on TDY and retirees needing medical care in the Jacksonville area. Full hookups, believe all 50AMP, no out buildings yet for showers, toilets or laundry facilities. Looks like about 40+ sites in a woodsy area on dirt sites. Must check in at Pelican Roost and drive around golf course and through base housing to get to the campground.

Can anyone confirm "Osprey Cove" military campground and provide any additional information? Rates, more details, etc..

Thanks for the help.

Larry, I just found this site and thank you for letting me sign on. Osprey Cove is indeed a new campground at Naval Station Mayport. It is being used for long term stays. I suspect that is one month or more. There are 50 full hook-up sites and there are presently 15 vacancies. The rate is $12 per night. It is located about two miles from Pelican's Roost, on the site of the old mobile home park. There is no bath house yet but one is planned. Call Pelican's Roost (904-270-7808) for further info and to confirm the scuttlebutt I've posted. I live about one hour from Mayport and it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood -- about 75 degrees.

GREAT! I love to hear confirmation's on "secret" campgrounds. Not that I didn't believe the original message, I just like to have 2 confirmations before adding it the the website.

I'll have Osprey Cove added soon!

Called today to make reservations for long term parking and they only had six spots available for the summertime. Each spot has W/S/E, 50amp. Have your own satellite or order cable once your there. They have very strict dog rules; must be inside at all times unless owner is outside with them. Can't keep them in a kennel or on a lead, found this odd. First time I've come across this in any military park. Folks were very courteous.

were first time retired campers and will head to fl in 5 days leaving a snow and cold buffalo. Its like everything in the military it takes a while to learn about the campgrounds. Were heading to pelican roost but are confused as to the reservation policy. Any advice as to how full the campground is this time of year and if so what else to do. Looking for a two week stay. thanks

Reply to rchwojdak:

I just made reservations at Pelican Roost on Monday, 22 Jan. Got reservation for four days starting on 7 Feb. I had not heard about the second "secret" campground there until I entered this forum today. I was there two years ago in January, and the place was jammed full. They are very nice and helpful there. They let folks double up on the hookups, park on the grass and get more folks in there. I assume the second campground has opened up space at both the old and the new. Hope this info helps. I reached them during normal duty hours at 904-270-7808.
