I don't really have much more to add to what's been written concerning the "secret" campground at Mayport. I was there (Pelican's Roost) over Labor Day and chatted to a couple of the hosts and other people I met. The "secret" campground (Osprey Cove) is indeed a long term area that's located past the post housing area. It was an old trailer park and as of yet doesn't have a bathhouse nor cable. I was told that cable was going to be installed shortly and that a new bathhouse was in the planning phases. It's intended for stays from 30 days to 6 months. I couldn't find out any information what's required after 6 months if you intend to stay longer. I really should have driven to it and took pictures but I was visiting family in the Jacksonville area and that took the majority of our time.
Everyone I met while there were very helpful and friendly. I'm sure if you had any questions concerning either area, a call to Pelican's Roost would provide all the information you could want.

And my hat's off to the staff of Pelican's Roost. Well maintained campground with alot of friendly people. We brought our dog and during the 4 days there, I didn't see any fanatic enforcers of the dog policy. Follow the rules and no one will say anything to you. Matter of fact, there were quite a few people with dogs. Just wish I had more time to stay and enjoy the area.

Bruce,

If you read the first part of this topic, you'll see that "upper" management there isn't real cooperative with me. I'm sure the daily camp hosts and workers are helpful and good folks. We stayed at Pelican's Roost a couple years ago (before I started this website) and we also enjoyed our visit there.

We have reservations for Ospry Cove in November, they called a few weeks ago and said that they now have a "lenght of stay" limit of 6 months. Previously there was none so I assume they are trying to discourage homesteading.

??? ??? ???

Users who have been receiving my eNewsletter know I'm always on the lookout for "secret" military campgrounds. These are campgrounds that are not well known, or advertised. We've uncovered almost a half dozen of these secret campgrounds in the past year.

I'm now on the trail of another secret campground at Mayport Naval Base, FL. I'm not talking about Pelican's Roost RV Park, but a second military campground there. I'm looking for confirmation and additional information on the following report:

In case you have not been notified there is a second campground at Mayport Naval Base. It is an old mobile home park on base called Osprey Cove for long term campers, military personnel on TDY and retirees needing medical care in the Jacksonville area. Full hookups, believe all 50AMP, no out buildings yet for showers, toilets or laundry facilities. Looks like about 40+ sites in a woodsy area on dirt sites. Must check in at Pelican Roost and drive around golf course and through base housing to get to the campground.

Can anyone confirm "Osprey Cove" military campground and provide any additional information? Rates, more details, etc..

Thanks for the help.

While keeping an eye out for secret cg also keep the other eye open for secret cottages ,cabins or mobible homes. Wife an I enjoy renting them when we on vacation.

We stayed in Mayport in December and February this year and Osprey Cove was definitely up and running. As many other posts have stated the Cove is intended for long term stays and the Roost for short term. The talk at the time was a bath house and community room similar, but maybe not as large as what is at the Roost now will be built. We have always enjoyed our visits there more than any other FamCamp. The staff is very helpful and friendly and will do more than I would normally expect to find a spot to fit us in, when we haven't been able to make reservations in the past. The volunteers are a close group that works together well and really gives a feeling of community to those staying there - not at all what I would call a bunch of "Good Ole Boys". Mayport is our favorite FamCamp, and it won't be too soon before we can get back down there and hook up over at "The Cove"!
