Just got an email from Keith Quinn who is the outdoor recreation director at Dyess. He says the completion date for the new FAMCAMP has been pushed off until April 5, 2013.

I am going to be in Abilene this week, and I hope to go by and see how it is progressing. I will try to take some pics and post them.

OK so just got back from Dyess and from what I can see, there is no way this FAMCAMP is going to be ready by next month. In fact, if it is ready by June I will be surprised. I took some pictures, but I forgot to bring the cable with me to download from the camera, so it's going to have until Saturday or Sunday when I get home. That being said, let me give some other details that will give you some idea about how it WILL be when it finally opens. It will be located on Louisiana Road near the base hospital.

You will probably be arriving on Arnold Blvd heading south from Business I-20. The main gate will probably not be available to anything over 25-30 feet, so you will have to use the "Military Road" gate. Where to turn is easily marked on Arnold Road. Unfortunately, the new FAMCAMP is really close to the front gate not the Military Road gate. I won't go into the roundabout directions, but I will be happy to help out when the camp actually opens and a new listing is created. The GPS Coordinates are 32.439551,-99.814273. Plug that into maps.google.com and set the display to satellite view and you can see a pretty good picture. The only other issue is that to get there you have to go right in front of the base hospital, so think speed bumps.

From the looks of it, the camp will be a pretty standard design, much like the one at Lackland AFB in San Antonio. The bathhouse/laundry/offices located at the open end of an elongated loop off of which the back in spaces are. Everything will be nice a flat with concrete pads and drives. From what I can see it looks W/S/E at every site, but there is also what looks like a dump station. Not going to be any trees to speak of except for whatever they plant, so read no shade for the hot West Texas summers. It is on the edge of a "grove" of over sized mesquite bushes worth more as a wind block than for shade.

Other than the Outdoor Recreation Building down the street and the hospital, there is nothing close by. The commissary and exchange complex is probably about 2 miles give or take. There is also a gas station, burger king, class six shop right near the BX/Commissary.

Everyone I interacted with on base was friendly and helpful. When they get it finished, it will be a nice place to stop for the night or for a few days to explore the Historic Abilene area.

Will update next with pictures. If you can think of anything I left out, let me know.
