In the naval service, officers who came up through the ranks have the nickname "mustang". My route was to SSGT (E6), Chief Warrant Officer 3, then finished at 20 years as an LDO Marine captain (03), so, Mustang03. 10 years in tanks, 10 years in intel. Lot of good times.

Almost as many promotions as my Grandfather.. He was an "Old Corps China Marine".. joined at 15 (in 1915).. retired as a SGTMAJ in 1960 but was a CAPT in WWII. Story has it that he made SGT & Staff several times each...

this is a good string. Glad it got started. Very interesting backgrounds from everyone.
Skyking: As a kid, I used to watch the TV program by the same name (kinda gives away my age, huh?). Despite my parents objections, that convinced me that I wanted to be a pilot. I realized that goal and until my recent retirement flew both military and civilian for 35 years.
And now, who knows the nickname for the Cessna 310 airplane flown in the TV program? Be careful, knowing that answer would put you in the 'youthfully aged' category.

Actually, by the time the show ended there were Songbird II and Songbird III. Sky King's niece, Penny, was my first love. I think her brother's name was Clipper.
