 I would have thought the same. When we visited Andrews AFB FamCamp, we had the strict requirement to store our firearms in the armory within 30 minutes (see my previous posting). They called ahead on the radio and the armory was expecting us. However, when we left the campground, we drove by the flight line and Marine One (POTUS helicopter) had just landed. We stopped and watched the President exit the helicopter and walk towards Air Force One. We weren't close (of course), but close enough to make out people. We then headed to the armory and retrieved our pistols. But there was no control on where we went afterwards, or time limit to leave the base. We could have easily returned to the FamCamp or elsewhere on base with weapons in hand.I would think that since POTUS is in and out of Andrews AFB on a regular basis, they might just have tighter firearms restrictions than do other bases.

JAX NAS has a large electronic sign at the main gate "NO PRIVATELY OWNED FIREARMS ALLOWED ON BASE"
Writing is on the wall: PO fire arms will be banned from all bases. Just a matter of time.

Andrews AFB WILL ask. Starting October 2014. It is THE VIP base for dignitaries and etc. Afterall, the President, Vice President, Sec of Defnse and others travel through the base at any given time. And the gates are manned by Military Air Police vice Rent-A-Cops. Security is everything at Andrews. Also the gates do have magnetometers and X-ray machines.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS call ahead
the rules vary wildly and I mean wildly
best to call and confirm.
some ask
some do not
AFB tend to be more user friendly in regards to lock and keep in your RV.
we frequent the same one often and i know their rules and comply....
they can be nice of you have them or really screw up your day and detain you uncomfortably

The rule is "No Weapons" for RV'ers. (That is different from the weapons policy for residents)
Some gates will ask, most don't, but you can be sure it is posted somewhere.
Bottom line: If you have a firearm, you would do well to declare it and have it processed into the armory. The processing is a little bit of a hassle, but if you don't, and it is found that you have a weapon in your trailer that is not declared, your access onto military bases will be permanently banned. That is a hell of a lot bigger hassle than registering the weapon.
