I started a thread about 3 years ago titled "Where's Everybody Headed This Year?" and it got a lot of feedback. I guess about this time of the year everybody is getting antsy to get back on the road! Anyway, I've recently had a couple of responses to the original thread, so I thought it might be a good idea to try it again. :woohoo:
I'm not going to be able to head out until the middle of June. Got a granddaughter graduating High School this year and some relatives from Noo Yawk coming to visit. But the day after they leave, I'm outta here!
First stop will be Fort Worth area to visit some friends and get some good BBQ. Then it's off to Roswell, NM. (Stop laughing...it will probably be a hoot!) Then it's off to make the loop of the National Parks in Utah. Start in Monument Valley, the head to Moab for Canyonlands and Arches. Down to Zion and Bryce. Then off to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas to see a couple of shows and lose my $10 at the casinos.
Next stops: a couple of weeks in the land of fruits and nuts, California. Spend a few days at Yosemite and then head for the Naval Weapons station at Seal Beach. Stop by and see some friends in the area who I haven't seen since the late 80's in Germany. Then do the Los Angeles area tourist stuff.
Leaving L.A. and heading to Phoenix to see my oldest granddaughter and my great grandson, then stopping at Davis-Monthan AFB for a week and touring the Tucson area. Got a map of Ghost Towns around there that looks pretty interesting. Headed from there to Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, then on to Aviation Arbor in New Orleans. Need to load up on some Cajun food! Last stop from there is the beach at either the Army CG in Destin or the Navy one in Panama City Beach. Then it's back home, probably sometime in September.
So what about y'all? Where are you headed this year?

We are planning our outing for this summer but will not be utilizing any mil facilities as we are heading north to utah and beyond. The kids want a family get together this summer so they got motel reservations in the Bryce area and we will be there a few days, then going north to N Utah, SE Idaho and then to a place called Hot Springs (actually its a warm spring) in SD. Then plan to get to Roosevelt park in ND then head back through Thermopolis WY, Pagosa Springs Co and home. Wife enjoys soaking in the springs so thus the trip.
When you get to DM go do some fishing for Mowry Trout ( www.civilwarguns.com/mowry.html ), its in an area down south of tucson. There are some old mining town relics down that way also. Ft Huachuca has a pretty good mil museum also. Lots to do as far as day trips in area. Just depends. The town of Ruby (abandoned basically) may also interest you. If you like we also have some hot springs about 100 miles away to the east. Dunes Hot Well off road area. take in the Chiracaua Nat Mon also about 1-150 Mi SE of tucson.
Be prepared for terrible HOT weather in your travels to areas indicated. Actually we avoid the land of fruit and nuts. I dont have a green card to cross over their borders I looked at local requirements for some of the campgrounds and they are too restrictive to enjoy for me. Have stayed at Pt Magu but it was years ago. As to Utah, head north as Arches and stuff is on east side of state , Monument valley is center west as are Zion and Bryce. Utah has some nice state parks and we plan to visit Gobblin SP, Kodachrome SP (named after the FILM due to all the colors!). Start in the east and go west young man is true for your travels.
Edit here: Just read this but it is just to get more tourist to the area: While out hunting and riding motorcycles WE have ENCOUNTERED illegals so it still not a nice as they are trying to portray and yes the signes are still up even as far north as I8 by Gila Bend!

We may try to get a week at Pelican Roost sometime in April. We'll be in Fort Myers Beach for the month of May then home for the first two weeks in June. Mid June we'll go up the east coast with stays in Williamsburg, Va, south Jersey, York, Pa. and the Poconos in Pa. We'll head west from there with the next significant stop at Ellsworth, then on to Grissly RV park at the west entrance to Yellowstone. Next stop Casper, Wy. to visit an old shipmate and then on to Cheyenne and a stay at F.E. Warren to visit daughter and son-in-law (retired CPO). Heading south we'll spend about 10 days at the Air Force Academy and slowly (actually we're doing everything slowly) start towards home with a stop at Branson, the Ms./La. gulf coast and I-10 east to home in NE Florida late September. At least that's the plan God willing and the creek don't rise.

I know what you mean about the heat Hank. I worked on a ranch down by Douglas during the summer of 1966. On the weekends we would get cleaned up and head to Tucson to cruise Speedway. LOL
I never heard the story about Tubac, but it looks interesting too. I'm seriously considering a day trip there now. I've got friends who retired at Fort Huachuca, so that's on the agenda. I've been to the museum there a couple of times.
You look like you've got a nice trip planned there, and it will be a LOT cooler than where I'm going.
You've got a nice trip planned there too Florida. The Black Hills and Yellowstone are really nice that time of the year. Snow should all be gone by then too, except on the top of the Rockies.
I'm with you on the slowly part too. I'll probably wind up stopping at a few other places that look interesting along the way.
You folks drive carefully and have fun!
John

Sounds like you've got some great trips planned!
You probably already know, but Connie and I are on our way to Alaska. We left 3 months ago and have made it as far as Port Hueneme, CA. (Did I forget to say we travel slow?) :silly: Of course, we don't want to get North until late May or June, so we're here for a week, then moving further north, a week at a time. Eventually, we'll end up in Seattle around early May to visit daughter and grandkids. We'll be ready to cross the border when the weather is good. We'll be traveling (leap frogging) with friends we met on this site years ago.
If interested, you can follow our travels on our personal website. Of course, we're visiting as many military campgrounds as possible along the way.
