Any Military Campground Manager, Camp Host or other employee that will give someone a verbal reservation for a site in a campground that's rules state that it’s a first come first serve campground is violating their own rules and should be reported. We, the users expect that campground to be as advertised and plan our trip in there accordingly. Line jumping - and that's what it is - should not be tolerated.

FastEagle,
I was not infering that any MCG should violate their existing policy, or that they should allow "line jumping". I was just stateing that it would be nice to be able to get a same day reservation. It would mean a change to their existing policy, I am not asking any MCG to violate any existing policy. I am am just saying it would be a nice option.
Monkey,
We were on the one year reservation for McDill about two years ago, after 14 months on the "list" we were still well over number 100. We pulled in and were able to use the overflow in the field. We ended up only staying one day, but had hoped to spend a few weeks there.

Frank, you should have been able to get "in line" and have a "rotated" FHU site after about a week or so 'in the field" overflow. Then I can't remember how long you can keep it -- a few weeks I think, but I never did the 'barrel dance' there long enough because of the "winter rules" -- I've stayed there plenty times during Fall and Spring though and always have lots of sites open -- MacDill has something like 400+ sites ... and only during Jan/Feb/Mar is the place filled

My wife and I haven't been turn away from any camp yet. I say yet because we generally never go on a trip, long or short, without planning ahead. As for "snowbirding" one son lives in Destin, Fla. and the other near Las Vegas. Both love they're dad : and have a place for me to park and hook up. So I have no experience with the winter time overcrowding.

When we arrived at MacDill this past January 1st from Michigan, we were number 120 on the "list" if I remember correctly. We rotated from E/W to E/W/S to no hookup field overflow. There is a two week limit in the E/W and E/W/S sites and the longest we spent in the field was about 8 or 9 days. We did this for two months and then shortly after March 1st we finally made it to the top of the list and got a full hookup site where we didn't have to move again until we left for home in the beginning of April.
I think the system is fair the way it is set up. They always keep some sites open for active duty folks. The employees at the office are usually very helpful and are doing a difficult job the best they can and, contrary to some comments I have read on this site, I have not seen any "cronyism" or favoritism used in the site rotation. We enjoy going to MacDill because of the friends we have made in the campground and also because we have many friends who live in the surrounding area.
