When it stops being fun. I hit that point at about 25 years but stayed for two more. Those last two were the worst in my career. Same thing in my second career as a state employee. It quit being fun about two years before I had enough points to retire. When it stops being fun and just becomes a job it is time to go.

It stopped being fun for me at about 28 years, but I had made up my mind to stay for 30, so waited and let them throw me out on the street at 30 years and two months, an old an broken man. :woohoo:

Retirement? Best thing I ever did. Wife loves it. We've been blessed with a second career that we love and after 20 years will provide a second retirement.

That said, times are tough and you have to be sure your family is ready for it. The one thing you need to remember; the first job you get after the military doesn't have to be the one you do for the rest of your life. It has to be one that pays the bills while you search for the one you want to do the rest of your life!!! Remember, it is common in the civilian world for employees to search for another job while doing their current one. No talk of disloyalty, etc.

Good luck.

they are kicking me out with over 30...plus it ain't fun no more and the law of diminishing returns was on the increase. 273 days until terminal leave then heading out on a four month journey out to the northwest.

Looking back on my answer to you about retirement,in retrospect my answer seems a little flip. I did not mean it to be so, please except my apology. I just meant that if retirement is in your thoughts you must be nearing the end of your career. In these times it is a big decision, talk it over with your family and I am sure you will make the right decision. Thank you for your sevice to our country.
