Vehicle entry onto installations

More and more military installations have stopped issuing DOD decals for vehicles to gain access to the base, instead requiring drivers (and sometimes passengers) to show proper identification before they may enter the installation. I reside near an Air Force base which does not issue decals anymore. However, when I visit campgrounds on installations that still require a decal for entry (in addition to ID), I must obtain a visitor’s pass for the length of my stay. Although not difficult to do, this is sometimes a hassle, especially when I travel in my motorhome. What suggestions do other members have to alleviate this situation?

The next time you are at an installation that does require or will issue a decal, register your vehicle on that facility. You probably carry all the necessary documents with you already. Last year I was at NAS Jacksonville and the gate attendant very sharply observed I had an expired decal. My choices were to go to Pass & ID for a Visitors Pass or simply obtain an NAS JAX decal. This is exactly what I did. Now I am one of the few military folks in Kentucky with a NAS JAX decal. Causes the folks at the gate at Ft Knox to take a second look, but it works everywhere.

This is what I ran into. I'm AF retired, do not need decal at most AF Bases. So, I decided to get a decal from Fort Knox. Was told they only issue decals to those that live within a certain area around Fort Knox. This is the second time I've run into that.

MacDill AFB will still issue stickers if you go to P&ID and tell them your a RV'er and you tow your car. I bet that most other AFB's will do the same if you ask.

We were at Kings Bay a week ago and opted for a decal rather than a temporary. But P&ID clerk said she thought the Navy was going to do away with them too.

I'm a TX resident (Escapees). The Navy in San Diego, CA refused to give me a permanent decal since I wasn't stationed there. Same thing at an Army base in New Mexico. Finally got a decal at Fort Bliss, TX since I was a TX resident.
