taking up camping spaces when traveling elsewhere

Sunday 1-22-2012 Mimi here again - I started this original ?. All who think this is OK to leave your RV at a site and go away on an extended period - I don't want to read any complaints that you were not able to get a site some place. I blame management totally on this issue. If management would not allow this to happen - then it would not happen. We were camped at Mayport and wanted to go to Disney for (2) nights. I asked at the office if that was OK - the office staff said it was OK for that short period of time. For short time periods I think this is OK - but to be gone for (2) months - now come on. This is taking a space from someone else that may be traveling. Think of your fellow/lady vet - don't be greedy and hog a space and you are not even there. I know some might say that atleast it is being rented - I hear that argument - but still in popular places like in Florida (during snowbird season) - that is simply not right - no matter how you look at it. I know for one - I would not be "a happy camper" - if we were told there was no space available and someone was off some place else for an extended period of time. Think of others - this is a great benefit that we have available to us all. Mimi

Well said Mimi and wonder why no one mentioned moving the RV to the storage lot while they are gone for an extended period, probably costs less than an actual site. Sure it would be a little extra work to clean out the fridge but seems like the right thing to do.

I wanted to spend some time if Florida last winter and could not find a Fancamp with a vacancy. If these folks are not going to use their space they should give them up to folks that will. It just seems like common courtesy to me.
Most federal and state campground where I have stayed have a two week or 1 month limit and if the campers are not there they must move their camper or tent.
We cannot spend the complete winter in Florida so we are at the mercy of what is available.

I think it is basically inconsiderate to reserve a space and leave it fir more than a couple of days knowing someone would sure appreciate being anle to hookup to those utilities. There should be a place to park your rig while you are away for any reason, so that while you are gone from your reserved spot it can be rented by another and your rent for those nights reduced appropriately. I call this good manners. The land belongs to the base, not us. We are guests not owners.

Let me go on record that I think if you leave your site for any reason take your RV with you. We arrived at Kings Bay Naval Sub Base on a Tuesday. There was a 5th wheel parked across from us with no one around but with 2 cars parked there until Sunday. Up comes this pickup truck hauling a popup camper. They parked the camper between their picnic table and there neighbor. Out jumped e teenagers who got in the cars and drove off. The Dad and Mom disappeared again in the truck and didn't see her again but saw Dad on Tuesday when he came to pickup the camper. Another side camping trip?

Had the same experience in Gila Bend, where people take up spaces and leave for weeks at a time, and one even went to another famcamp in Corpus with their camper while taking up space in Gila with the 5th wheel.....it is just ....COURTESY, if you are not there, move your rig into dry camping or store it.....paying for the space is not the issue. We saw many have to stay in the dry area while these(homesteaders) do as they please without regard to the rest of us......
