Military Base Entry Checks

Hello everyone. Saw the postings on the ID entry identification scanning of ID cards. Have researched it and waiting for a reply to a message. Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIS) is being phased into US bases. It is being used at many overseas bases. Know it will be frustrating to many who are just visiting like we will be. If you are not in their system (as many of us will be) you will be sent to the visitor's center to be entered into system. It is very bad that all branches of the services have failed to notify retirees and those who do not go to the bases often of the impending changes. I am sure it is just as frustrating for the security forces concerned. With the overseas deployments many bases are using civilian companies at the base entry points. I am sure it is just as frustrating for the security forces concerned. As with progress we all have accept it. Will keep you posted

With the CPU technology today, it's pretty simple to create an ID card that will fool a 'quick look' by gate security. As other technology improves, then we need to improve the security response to it.

So, I imagine this scanning is a response to that problem - I actually have no idea how many people would make an ID card and attempt to use it? I mean to what end?? Shop at the commissary?? Use the BX ?? Unlikely --

So it seems like all other security measures - prevent the major problems from developing into cases of organized infiltration.

A little inconvenience seems worth it to me personally, so we do have security and can RV and camp and shop and see our doctors without worries.

I agree, I went to the base close to where I live (Dyess AFB TX) and asked the gate guard who told me he had not heard anything and said that whatever the budget is for the bases/commands will dictate if they will convert. Then again it will the be major command directions.

As mentioned somewhere, if our DEERS record is up to date, shouldn't that already make us "part of the system". If told to get into the system, shouldn't this be a one-time visit? Is the system being shared DOD wide? Or is there a seperate "system" for each base?

DEERS is a completely separate system used for the TRICARE. I think the DOD is flying by the seat of their pants trying to figure out how to make entry onto a base more difficult. Then again anyone can figure out how to get onto a base, often even the surrounding 'fences' do not stop. I just want them to let the retirees knows what is going on. Air Force stopped the Afterburner newsletter, can get it on net. But I guess they only let the people in the immediate area know. Will keep checking it things to let people know and try to make things easier. I am the type of person not happy until I find the answer not the Bull

Interesting experience yesterday on this subject -- had the cracked windshield replaced on my son's truck. Sticker crumbled when the guy removed it. But, I didn't think about it and drove it over to the base ... Otis ANG base on Cape Cod -- it has private 'gate guards' not MP's ...

So, as I'm approaching the gate, I realize I don't have the sticker... look in GB, "Oh, Oh, no registration card". So, pull up ready to explain and hope.

"Guard" sticks his head out of the shack, looks at my ID card from about 10 feet away, and waves me in. So, much for security.

Found the reg card later in the side-boot -- and the truck is legal ... but pretty lax at the gate regardless.
