Military Base Entry Checks

Don't know about the other major commands but ACC finally understood that it was a waste to require stickers when a 100% ID check is done. Sure saves someone money of not having to have them printed.

Approximately two years ago, DOD released a directive that would remove the requirement for installation stickers. This was done for several reasons, one being the sticker program costs money and suspension of the requirement would result in a huge cost savings. But, the main reason was that the directive also stipulated that all vehicle occupants must present valid identification upon entry to the installation. At the same time, DOD implemented the Secure DOD Installation Access with the CoreStreet PIVMAN Solution – basically, the handheld device the security guard uses to scan your (registered) ID card upon entry at the gate. Unfortunately, as with many DOD policies and programs, the branches have delayed full implementation of the program for a number of reasons, of which I am certainly not privy. During our travels these past two years, we have seen all manner of entry security, from a requirement for all vehicle occupants to present their ID cards, to, like you, being flagged in with little concern for who was in the vehicle. It’s unfortunate indeed that installation security seems to be so hit and miss.

Regarding the stickers, only the Air Force acted on the directive to eliminate them, but not even all Air Force bases did so. Davis-Monthan AFB still requires stickers (at least they still were required on our last visit).

I find it very odd that only the Air Force stopped using stickers. WHY??? Over the past 2 weeks we stayed USAF FamCamps and were told at each gate that stickers were no longer required at their base. What happened to military security? Went through Camp Lejeune, NC about 2 months ago and the Marine guard said I didn't need a pass to go through. I also found that to be strange.

I found this to be a very timely subject. I saw on the Fox news channel, that there was an arrest this week, of people who had been planning on attaching camp Lejeune. The story mentioned they had been casing the base for sometime. I wish the bases would wake up, and get more serious about guarding military bases. I dread staying at the bases anymore. We will be going to Ft Meade for 2 weeks, and they barely look at the ID cards. They don't even turn them over to check expiration. They contact out the guards. They seem like it is a chore just to come to work. I hope they wake up before it is 2 late.

An ID card check at the gate solves the problem of unauthorized access. It has always been my opinion that "base stickers" were a waste of time and effort. The money spent on the sticker programs could be better used in so many places. Every state requires that the driver have in his possession, an operator's license, proof of insurance, and a registration certificate. Just enforce the law on base the same way its enforced off base. No big deal. I look at stickers as just another cs rule that can be used to spoil a day. How does a sticker ensure greater security?

The stickers identify unauthorized personnel from parking in spaces reserved for SGMs, Chief's, Colonels and Generals at the PX, BX, Clubs, and Commissary being used by their wives.

Now that's funny! Unfortunately, probably more true than any of us care to admit.
