Got a new base sticker for my truck this past week at Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. Very painless. Walked in at about 1 p.m. and took a number. In less than 10 minutes I was out the door with new sticker in hand. Great system there and nice people to deal with. I felt good about everything while walking back the the truck.

Went to Fort Huachuca in AZ one time for a base sticker. The lady told she could not issue me a sticker( only a temporary) since I had New Mexico plates. I ask to see the person in charge. As it turned out he was a retired Navy chief from Silver City NM where I was residing at the time, we also lived a few blocks from each other in SD when we were on active duty. I got my sticker. A year later I went back in to register anothe vechile she was still grunbling about having to give me a sticker with out of state plates.

I've written a letter to one of my congressmen, spelling out the ins and outs of the decal system, went quite in depth with it. Will see what kind of response I get from him. He ususally answers my letters personnally, so we'll see his response on this one. One of the points I pushed in the letter was the cost factor, hoping that would get more attention, then just a disgruntled retired person being hasseled. We'll see, will post another when I receive an answer.

If you are going to have to show your insurance card along with your ID I just as soon go in every 3 or 4 years and get a base sticker. They will have to check the date on on your insurance card and that takes time which means the lines will get longer entering the base.

My recent retired newsletter from the USAF stated that the USAF bases in the San Antonio, TX area WILL still issue DOD vehicle decals to retired military. Although not required for USAF bases, they understand that retired still need them for access to other bases.
