What is your Status?

What is your Status? was created by karylkoch
What is your Status, retired, active, disabled vet, or DOD, and how does this status affect your military camping experience, if you do use famcamps?
We are retired army, and travel full time. We love going to military campgrounds, though a few leave a lot to be desired, but many Famcamps are very nice. There was a topic on this site, about "homesteaders", which over all is my most aggravating thing about some of our famcamps. The best part is meeting some wonderful people, who are like minded in many ways.

RE: the homesteader comment. Having served over a third of a century in it, I learned that most non-combat aspects of the military could not find their butt with both hands in broad day light. And that there is absolutely no standardization between military installations when it comes to campgrounds. If that weren't a true statement, then this website wouldn't exist.
I agree that we military RVers have an obvious common bond when parked in a FamCamp. But, respectfully, don't forget to spread that when in other campgrounds.

I am a retired disabled vet. As for doing fam camps I have done very few since it seems I rarely pass near a base in my travels. Much like having passport america as a rv support, you have to go out of your way to use it than I usually pass it by. Gas is like gold too precious to travels out of the way when I can usually find a low priced rv park along the major highways if I go to the smaller towns. I also found that if I stay longer in one location I can find even lower prices. A month for 200 to 300 dollars is great and the few fam camps I have been to do not have a monthly rate they only had a daily rate.

Retired from the Army 1981, Retired from teching 2006, have used Famcamps on occasio if It was along my planned route. Have found that many are more costly then the civilian parks. Some are great and some are dumps. My last trip of 10 weeks, I planned my route by using this site to review the campgrounds along my route, some I used and others I bypassed based on the write ups. I was able to get reservations in LA,AL, FL, SC, VA. Those camps were as written up in the "campground reviews"

I am retired Air Force and do enjoy staying in Military FamCamps, especially some of the nicer ones, such as Tyndall AFB Fl, Pensacola NAS, Short Stay SC, Uchee Creek Ga, are just a few. However, we also enjoy Corps of Engineer campgrounds and these are especially attractive now that I have passed the 62 mark and have a GOLDEN AGE ACCESS card that reduces the camping fees by 50% at these and several other campgrounds. The card cost $10 and is good for life. I think it has a different name now, but it is still the same card. Can be purchased at any National Park and some other places, I think. There are a lot of COE campgrounds out there and most are very nice.

We are active duty Navy and are "homesteaders" at Foster Creek RV Park in Charleston, SC. We were transferred here in Oct. and unfortunately we were not able to sell our house in FL, so we are currently fulltiming. We have taken advantage of some of the other family camps in our travels and have enjoyed the campgrounds and the other folks while we have been there. We look forward to retirement and the chance to travel more and take advantage of other camps. If anyone happens to stop by the park in Charleston we look forward to meeting you.
