PETS

I am going extremely WAY out on a limb here. I probably will alienate evey pet/animal lover on the site. But since there hasn't been a contractory reply to this post, I'm going to be the one who does it. And I don't really care if you disagree with my comments because you all need to hear the other side. I'm not the only one who has this opinion. I'm just the one who had the gonads to state it.

At the risk of getting blasted by all you pet lovers, I don't like your pets. I don't have any and I don't want any. I don't want yours anywhere near MY site- I paid for it - especially coming around when I have guests trying to have a nice dinner outside. I don't want to pet them and be subject to their fleas or other abnormalities. I don't want your pet anywhere near my grandkids regardless of how "well mannered" you think your meat eating, pit bull or major toothed dog is. If they do the least little thing to harm them, your pet will not longer exist! And then I'm physically coming after you.

I don't care for hearing the 24/7 barking because you've left them inside the RV or on a leash while you toured the town. I detest seeing their poop anywhere in the campground...that would be ANYWHERE. If you think that is ok then perhaps I should relieve myself on your RV doormat.

I'd suspect that every campground only "tolerates" them, but would rather not have pets around. Why do you think they ask you if you have any when checking in???? It's a liability issue regardless of whether the pet owners agree with it or not.

It only takes ONE idiot pet owner to screw up the system for the rest of you. If that is not a true statement then you haven't read the full thread.

Now, just so that you understand, I am not an animal hater. I don't hunt, I catch and release fish, and go to great lenghts to feed wild animals during winter periods. As one person stated in this thread, they are just animals. They do what is natural. Only an owner has control of that.

So keep your pet away from my RV site and we'll both be happy.

Hey Rick -- as a pet owner that takes care of his pets (at home) I'll climb partway out on that limb with you ... and you're right about "keep your pets off my site", but that's mainly because some take care of the pet and some don't, and I don't know which one happens to be here at the time and don't want to find out either. "OOOPPPSSS, I'm sorry, he/she never does that," just doesn't cut it.

And there are always gonna be a few that do ruin it for the rest. And if everyone kept the pet on the site they paid for, we'd never have that problem. But, some don't and there you have it. I've traveled minimally with my dog in the past, but don't do it any more for some of those very reasons, and the last reason is he died and has trouble walking himself anymore, his legs are a little too stiff.

Right there is the main point in these discussions. I'm always amazed at the number of people that will let their pet do his business and then just walk on and ignore it. We now only travel with one small schnauzer since the older one died. Although this is the friendliest dog you'll ever see we realize not everyone wants to socialize with him. In the campgrounds we never take him out unless on a leash and poop bags handy. When we go for a walk we try to stay within the dog walk area of the campground, if available. We never cut through someone else's site (which we don't do even if the dog is not with us since that is their yard/home for the period of time they are staying there) nor do we assume others are interested in our small family member. (If I traveled with kids--heaven forbid--I would not let them trespass on other folks sites either.)

My attitude, if someone wants to meet my dog they will come over to me while we are out and about. But on that subject, it always amazed me of how many people would just walk up and start petting our dogs. Our female dog, the one we lost last year, was not friendly with strangers and was known to bite people who insisted on reaching for her head. (She would normally growl first before snapping.) I always warned people that she would bite and she would growl at them. At that point I figured I had warned them and Brandi had warned them so if they presisted, "Oh all dogs love me", then if they got bit it was their fault.

My recommendation to pet owners is enjoy them but keep them to yourself since not everyone is a pet lover.

Heh heh heh, I kind of feel the same way about kids and grandkids.

I certainly agree with most of the points made about pets. People should be responsible for cleaning up after their pets and making sure they do not go on other people's sites, bark, and all of the other things. I wish there were just as much attention given to ill mannered children running loose, screaming and hollering, throwing rocks, flying down the street on bicycles and golf carts, running through other sites. I think they should be the ones on a leash sometimes. But just like the pet owners who think their little dog is the cutest thing in the world, the parents and grandparents of these kids seem to think they can do no wrong. I have had more camping trips ruined by a group of little hellions the grandparents brought up for the weekend than I have by a barking dog.

As a side note: I never understood the dog poop phobia. I sit up at the rec area and watch flocks of geese come up on the sites and poop everywhere, the birds are pooping on the campers and picnic tables, deer wander through in evenings and drop pellets, fox, rabbits, squirrels and coyote doing the same thing, ferrel cats pooping a spraying, and no one even notices. But boy you let one little terrier drop a 3 inch log and you would think we were under a biological attack.

Guess I'll get a little flack on this so let her rip. Some of you were just taking this pet thing a little too seriously. Pets are a fact of camping life and so are kids. I just happen to think that pets are not necessarily the worst thing in the campground. I'll keep my terrier in control and make sure he doesn't bother you if you will keep you grandkids quiet, off my site, and not let them throw rocks at my coach (something my terrier has never done). If you are already doing that then fine; I am already picking up my dog's poop and making sure he is not barking so we are even. Let's go camping and ENJOY. If you see a dog owner not cleaning up after their pet, offer them a baggie. If they allow their dog on you site, ask them politely to remove them. If a dog is barking, go ask their owner if they can calm them (when they come back). That is what I do with the parents and grandparents of obnoxious kids. Now some of them don't take too kindly to being confronted, so you are on your own there.

I wholly agree with you on this one. I'll take my 12 pound Schnauzer over a bunch of kids anyday. We have three grand daughters, all under the age of three. I've told my wife that anytime between now and the time these beautiful little girls are grown if she hears the words "Let's take the girls with us" come out of my mouth then she has permission to kick my ass. :

You have hit the nail on the head. I have seen more kids running rampant and causing problems than any pets any where any time. And its usually those same people who hate pets who let the kids and grandkids run rampant and ruin everyones vacation. I have had more problems with kids screaming and running up and down campsites than I have ever heard dogs bark.
And I too will take flak I am sure especially when I say I travel with two cats and a dog. My cats probably make more noise than the dog but convince others of that. Having a dog is like having a virus.
